The Art Of Procrastination

Kim Beaumont

Have you ever kept putting off something, making excuses, getting easily distracted by anything and everything just to avoid doing something?

That’s me this week!

Even right now I‘m supposed to be doing it. But instead I’m writing about not doing it!

Whether it’s checking emails, [which isn’t usually a job I love to do] sending out texts, scrolling social media or comfort eating….ANYTHING to avoid getting down to it and getting it done!

PROCRASTINATION - the action of delaying or postponing something. Or, as my grandmother would say ‘dithering about’.

I must say I’m pretty good at dithering; like noticing that cobweb in the corner of the room. [Yep, dusting is another of my great procrastinations.] And then I end up on a house wide search to hunt down all said cobwebs, only to find that my bathroom mirrors could do with a ‘cut and polish’ as well. All in the name of ‘dithering about’, delaying the inevitable.

And that’s the thing isn't it? It is INEVITABLE. Life is like that. It will come around again. Unless of course we live under a rock and never come out! And as much as that is tempting sometimes, there is a choice to be made. A choice between living a life of avoidance and control . Or choosing to do the hard thing, the boring thing and sometimes the painful thing, to press in and push through.

The beauty of doing hard things is that there is ALWAYS life and blessing on the other side! We just can’t see it yet, and we never will if we don't live with our eyes and heart wide open. Ready to embrace a life of endless possibilities, if only we would stop dilly dallying about. [another of my grandmother’s sayings]

Galatians 6:9

“Let us not grow weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest, if we do not give up.”

So, I want to share 3 things each day that I [try to] do that help tame the monster of procrastination:

  • Make time to do one thing I love that brings me life each day. Depending on my schedule, that could look like going for a quick walk around my neighborhood or hiking in the outdoors, singing in the shower at the top of my voice, or spending an extra 5 minutes in bed soaking in His presence.

  • Be intentional about blessing someone else. Sending an encouraging text, making a meal, or taking time to say hi to a neighbor.

  • Set aside a specific time to do that thing you’re putting off, and put a time frame on it.

I like to set a timer and then I feel like I have achieved something - even if it’s only for a short time.

Being intentional and learning to steward our days is key to conquering procrastination. But also remembering to give ourselves grace depending on what season we’re in. Sometimes we are our own worst critics.

So, now I’ve given myself and hopefully you a pep talk, let’s get to it!

What are you procrastinating about today?

What is one step you can make towards your ‘inevitable’ that will lead you into your endless possibility and opportunity?

Prayer:

Thank you God that you are good . Thank you that I can partner with Holy Spirit, for strategies from Heaven to help me do the things you are calling me to do. Thank you that I am created to do the hard thing, the boring thing and even sometimes to face the painful things in my life. Thank you that I live from a place of victory and that you bring life and breakthrough when I lean into you.

Father I pray that I can live my life with my eyes and heart wide open to the possibilities and surprises you have for me!
